The Des Moines Public Schools and its Reimagining Education committee unveiled the outline of the Reimagining Education proposal at the January 21 School Board meeting. At the annual State of the Schools event on February 11, DMPS shared the details of the plan.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Reimagining Education community engagements between February 11 and March 2. Our Reimagining Education committee will review the feedback gathered from 19 community and staff meetings and the online survey. All told, there were around 2,500 responses to the committee’s request for feedback. The Reimagining Education committee will meet soon and decide on adjustments to the plan before bringing it back before the School Board.

How is the District using public input to inform the proposal, and when will proposed revisions be made public?
The community’s engagement in this process will help shape the future of our schools. In addition to the students, staff, families and community members who are helping to shape the plan on the Reimagining Education Committee, DMPS also engaged the public to get feedback to the proposed plan. The district hosted nearly two dozen public forums and received about 2,100 responses to an online survey. These valuable insights — including perspectives on the plan’s strengths, challenges, and opportunities — are being consolidated for review. The Reimagining Education Committee will use this feedback to help identify potential revisions to the proposal. The recommended changes to the plan that come from this input will be shared with the community and the school board in April.
How did DMPS engage people representing the diversity of the community?
At the community conversations, the district made a distinct effort to engage people from all backgrounds and all parts of the community, including:
- Three exclusively staff conversations
- 16 community conversations:
- In each region of the community
- At different times of day
- On both weekdays and weekends
- Including four sessions offered in both Spanish and English
- Including one session with translators for several other languages frequently spoken by district stakeholders
What feedback has the community provided about the Reimagining Education proposal?
Well over 2,000 people participated in one of several community engagement sessions and/or completed an online survey about Reimagining Education. This input is valuable in making revisions and adjustments to the proposal. Click here to download a copy of the report containing the feedback and input provided at the sessions and in the survey.
